I'm referring to two things: Beat juggling and finding a job that actually pays and isn't considered menial.
Effort and practice. Both of the above will eventually come.
I had the amazing pleasure of seeing Medeski, Martin & Wood @ the Aladdin Theater this weekend. This was my 4th time experiencing them live and the general consensus after the show is always: Anyone who thinks that (their) favorite band is A) more talented musically or B) can put on a better live show then these guys is pretty much wrong.
It's mind bending to consider how good they are. Probably one of the best concert experiences of my life. We had amazing seats positioned for the best sound with our view unobstructed for the entire show. Don't know if you could have asked for anything else.
First set was practically all improv with Medeski or Wood playing repeated lines and everybody working off of them. Most of the playing was dark and sassy. For a second I thought Medeski was finally slowig down in his career, not being aggressive with any of his instruments, teasing his brilliance but never following through. That frame of mind came to an end when they started jamming on the last "song" of the first set. Amazing. Complete awesomeness.
Granted this tour is supposed to be about building new meterial on the fly but I don't think I recognised a single tune from the first set with the exception of a possible Nocturen bassline.
Second set was shorter but way more agressive and funk then the first. Less open improve and more song based tunes. All amazing BTW. Their new meterial is shaping up to be great. I wish I had the vigor to write more but i'm getting hungry and have to pee so i'm cutting this short.
MMW are a great band and everyone should go see them. 2nd set of friday night was some of best music i've ever laid ears on.
